Laurel Alanna McBrine

sp

As a young person, Laurel Alanna McBrine began drawing precise copies of masterpieces by famous artists of the past, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Hans Holbein.  Laurel also created countless drawings of individuals and exhibited her work to some acclaim in her small community of Vernon, British Columbia.

Over the past decade, Laurel has sought to gain knowledge of color and to meld her ability to draw with the art and science of painting.  Laurel loves to capture the likeness and personality of her subjects.  She is inspired by the unique individuality and beauty of each person, place and thing she paints.  She enjoys the rich colors and texture of oils and the tactile pleasure of placing a brushstroke of luscious paint in just the right spot.  Painting subjects from life is very important to Laurel so she strives to regularly make time to paint subjects from life and en plein air, in order to advance her abilities.  Laurel delights in creating a family heirloom with quality materials and methods, which will be treasured for generations to come.

Although Laurel’s work is representational, it is the emotional impact and abstract qualities of the composition and subject that have the most resonance.  The artistic legacy of past masters such as Diego Velasquez, Mary Cassatt, Cecilia Beaux and the superlative John Singer Sargent is a constant presence in her creative direction.  Laurel seeks to combine these historical influences with her personal poetic vision.  Laurel’s present work is a culmination of years of training and effort and represents art which speaks to the past but is firmly grounded in our time.
