A teacher of mine in Italy said he didn’t know how I would ever survive. The art curator of the Beau Xi Gallery in the mid eighties, kindly told me I was ten years ahead of my time but in the same breath said, “but your art won’t pay the rent”. Well, I’m still here. I survived, and I think my work looks pretty tame now by today’s standards
I have been traveling to New York City quite a bit to see as many new and old artists as possible. I especially enjoyed the Egon Schiele Show at the Neue Gallery and the Van Gogh drawings at the Met. I caught an extraordinary collection of Modigliani, near the Carlyle Hotel last year, which I just stumbled upon.
As a fine artist, I like to portray the inner world of emotion and energy conveying the spirit of the subject matter with intensity and movement. I like to balance emotion with design, impressionistically using reflections of light. I paint very fast using rhythmic, expressive brush strokes to create a sense of the moment. There is a compassionate and a psychological understanding in my work, I believe, especially in my portraits
