Edward Anderson

sp

My name is Ed Anderson, and I am a 2D visual artist. My painting style is representational with an orientation to realism. My interest is in living things which has led to a focus on portraiture.

I believe every living creature has a story to tell. I try to imagine that story and to represent it visually in a depiction of that creature. Portraiture is most often thought of as an image of a human. I believe portraiture should include animals as they also have a story to tell. My goal is to create in the viewers mind a sense of the portrait subject’s story. The viewer’s interpretation of the story may be different from the story I see, but that is OK. Each viewer sees the portrait through the filter of their own life story and will interpret it differently. The important thing is that they see a story.

My preferred mediums are oil and graphite. My oil portraits are somewhat formal, while portraits I do in graphite are usually more casual. Historical artists I am inspired by are Anders Zorn and John Singer Sargent for human portraiture and Edwin Landseer and Rosa Bonheur for animal portraiture. Contemporary artists that I admire are Steve Hanks and Vladimir Volegov.
