My work explores the human presence through expressive, painterly portraiture. Working primarily in pastel and oil, I am drawn to the subtle interplay of likeness, colour, light, and emotion that gives each sitter their individuality. I approach portraiture not simply as representation, but as an opportunity to capture energy, mood, and a moment of lived experience.
Colour plays a central role in my practice. Through bold, intuitive mark-making and layered surfaces, I aim to balance observation with interpretation, allowing the medium to guide the emotional tone of the work. I am particularly interested in how colour and light can suggest inner life, turning familiar forms into something felt as much as seen.
Pastel offers a sense of immediacy and intimacy that aligns with my process. Its softness and intensity allow me to work responsively, pushing and pulling between structure and freedom as the portrait evolves. Each painting becomes a conversation between sitter, artist, and material.
Ultimately, my goal is to create portraits that invite sustained looking and quiet connection, honouring the individuality of the subject while leaving space for interpretation and emotional resonance.
